WEATHER CONDITIONS

Season phenology: late

Weather conditions:

Spring thaw started in early May, but was replaced by winter weather by the end of month. Temperature was negative on 4 June in Deputatski settlement (69^22'31"N, 139^56'05"E), and snow covered 90% of the surface. It snowed periodically till 12-14 June; day-time temperature did not exceed 1-2^C, frosts again were normal at night. Snowcover reduced to 50% with a warming on 15 June, after a number of sunny days. Subsequent fall in temperature supressed bird activities, but did not prevent start of reproduction resulting in clutch initiation by many species by 20 June. At the western bound of the ridge at Ust-Kuyga settlement Yana R. broke on 20 May due to the thaw, but then cold weather with frosts and snowstorms returned and retained for 3 weeks. The cold weather was over by 20 June there, but the highest flood resulted in going uder water not only of floodplain, but also of the first river terrace, including settlement (for the first time from its foundation 30 years ago).
The spring can be characterized as extremaly late, with breeding dates more typical for high Arctic species, than for forest tundra birds.

BIOTIC CONDITIONS

Rodents abundance evaluation:

low

Breeding conditions:

Predation pressure on bird clutches was, probably, moderate.

Rodent dynamics:

Vole traces were rare in the valley of Irgychen River, while picas were locally common on uplands. Two voles (adult Root Vole and unidentified juvenile) were met in Ust-Kuyga settlement during flood on Yana River. Rodent numbers were low in tundra, where remnants of voles taken by Rough-legged Buzzards and Raven were inspected, and traces of lemmings met occasionally. Two Root Voles were also met in forest tundra.
